Can one really have too many headphones? And are some headphones really that much better for running and working out than others? Do certain headphones make more sense using them inside vs outside? The answer to all questions is yes – and I am here to give you my opinion on what headphones I find best for outside activities. I have tested several brands and types of headphones, own 4 types of headphones (which I all love and use for different purposes) and found that the Shokz OpenRun Pro are the best for running, walking, biking or any other outside activity.

Around 3 months ago, I started running again on a more or less regular basis; well, for now at least. I try to go run 3 times a week if I manage and I always take one or both dogs with me. The small one is not a fan of colder temperatures or early mornings so then I tend to only take the big one. Either way, I am never alone. I started running with the AirPods Max from Apple and loved them to keep my ears warm when it was colder outside. As the temperatures rise, however, they are not the most practical. Also, even though you may have amazing sound and little to no background noise – this is exactly what I was missing.
When I go running, or even just walking the dogs, I want to listen to my podcasts and hear everything around me. Why is that so? Easy – being out with dogs means I constantly need to have an eye and ear on the surrounding environment. Be that a bike ringing in the background wanting to pass by, hearing a car approach when nearing or crossing the road, or hearing a horse near us when walking through the fields. These are all situation I need to call the dogs to walk by my side or even stop. As I donโt have eyes at the back of my head and because I cannot watch my 360ยฐ surrounding all the time, having open ears is most practical!

The Shokz OpenRun Pro headphones allow me to listen to my podcasts (or music that is), whilst simultaneously being aware of my environment. This is due to the open ear design; meaning they do not cover nor close your ears. I find this most convenient when walking the dogs in the morning or over lunch, but also imagine it being perfect for when out with the children one day. Also, these are perfect for riding the bike. I love listening to podcasts but I hate not hearing my surroundings; especially when driving full speed on my e-bike on the road next to the cars. In fact, I think it is utmost dangerous to do so. With the Shokz OpenRun Pro headphones, however, this is not an issue.
Now, one must understand that these have been constructed especially for this purpose; for working out, especially when outside and being able to hear your surrounding. If you are looking for noise cancelling headphones or want the best sound in the world; these will not make you happy. Also, if you want to blast music at the loudest volume possible, I also do not recommend them. It is possible, but because they work with vibration, you will find your whole jaw vibrating when turning up the volume to the highest point. One thing that is great though, is the cleaning part. They are water resistant and you can wipe off any sweat in a less than a minute – keeping them fresh smelling and looking. Oh, and before I forget – the battery life really does work well for a good 10+ hours. Another peak, because it means I only have to charge them every couple of days! Finally, you can wear these headphones together with a cap, sunglasses, a headband and all things accessories for your and face without an issue – super practical!

So, why should you own the Shokz OpenRun Pro headphones? Because keeping your loved ones, your dogs, your babies and yourself safe whilst working out outside should always be your priority. It surely is mine!
Oh, and how cute are my model puppies? I think they did an amazing job! ;)
